Flip Ultra HD: Flip it good
Bought me a new Flip Ultra HD digital video camera a couple weeks back. Now this was a decision made with diligent study and intense meditation. You think I’m being sarcastic, but this time, not so much.
I spent days pouring over articles on the web, reviews of the Flip Ultra, reviews of it compared against competitors models, reviews of it compared against Flip’s Mino HD model. I literally watched scores of YouTube video comparisons between the Flip Ultra HD and the Flip Mino HD. The Mino being less than 2/3 the thickness was a huge selling point that I spent way too much time trying to convince myself was worth losing the video quality. Not so.
I even went into Target and bought a Sony Bloggie with the little swivel cam that points at either a subject in front of you or flips over the top and points at yourself. I mean it was Sony right, that name I think connotes superiority in image quality. It even had a still cam built in up to 5 mega-pixels. But when up against (literally side-by-side) the Flip Ultra HD, the video quality was so significant that it simply couldn’t be ignored. Especially in low light situations, such as film festivals and that stuff, which I plan to be covering a great deal of…
With the Sony I had to put my head directly under a lamp for the camera to pick up my face. With the Ultra, it was soft and crisp at the same time, all the colors were there and nothing was silhouetted. So as this page shows, I bought it.
It’s a great video recorder. used it for the first time ever, at the Irvine Lake Mud Run, April 10th, 2010. I recorded my favorite band of all time, Dramarama against the sun, as they played song after song of my favorite tunes. Check out the video of it HERE if you doubt me.
It’s easy to upload, to edit and send off to YouTube. Just make sure you have capacity for all of the crazy video you’ll be shooting, because I swear this thing’s addictive. I’ve already convinced two of my clients to purchase one. Check out videos from Kenny Luck’s first ever Dream Conference shot just last week HERE.
